This entry is part 7 of 5 in the series punishment for thieves and lovers

they crawled in without askin
like whispers of smoke
pressin into my bones
settlin under my ribs
like they’ve always been there

they wait in the quiet

feel them
movin under my skin
climbin thru the cracks I thought I sealed
they slip thru my veins
like hunger
like thirst
like the need to fuckin breathe
feedin on the noise I never make

the box…
I thought I locked it
but the tremors are louder now
I can hear them scrapin
at the edges
like they know the way out

I tell myself it’s fine
that I can keep them in
but they’ve learned how to breathe
without air

and every breath I take

feels like I’m feedin them more

what’ll happen when I open it?
when they spill out
like lava thru the cracks
spreadin over the world
scorchin everythin they touch?

I can feel them
tearin the box apart
from the inside

and I know
when they get out
there’s no goin back
