Midnight Carnival

Standing like a figure from some Twain adventure
i keep wondering when drubin’s gonna put beads in that hair
when the fires came up from the underworld
he spit them out with a harsh breath

i swear I have met the long-lost son of Redbeard
while the court jester and his sister wife
danced like crazed fire breathing beasts
pointing through the smoke
with five skull rings and a pair
ink pouring through the pours of his skin
a top hat with frayed edges
he said to his carny operarius
those are stars up in that sky
so let the jesters dance their dance
show the people in
they’re here for a show
let the unsuspecting come get their fill
of the midnight carnival
