Spring Cleaned
Can’t you just tell
its spring
or thereabouts ..
The old house smells
vaguely again
of both hyacinths
and new disinfectant ..
Plus there’s not
a single cobweb
or dust mote in sight ..
Meanwhile,
in the yard outside,
the line looks
fit to break beneath
the combined
weight of our fresh
laundered sheets
and all of our
blankets are stowed
somewhere safe
until the first freeze
at the very least ..
But still, in the interim,
freshly squeezed
sunlight is welcome
to filter and to
strain itself through
grandma’s old
crochet net curtains ..
Oh’ and take
a good look at both
the grate and at
the hearth while you
are here since they’ve
both been blacked
and scrubbed clean ..
Plus the fairies
have been and left
a handful of daisies ..
Each stood in a brown
earthenware pot
on a table next to
the recently touched
up window sill
and several very neat
piles of old household dust ..
