    The Debt in the Blood

It seemed like the more me and Daddy grew, the more joy we found in our lives, the more Mama's life back in Mississippi began to unravel. A year after Mama married Darnell, she tried to have a baby...

    • I like your atmospheric stylings, a rural yet well-travelled wisdom. Restless yet soothing in a way, like a cool breeze on a hot day. The sights are great things to see, but what is seen cannot be unseen. Like you say…it becomes responsibility. Most folks will fight with the sight to avoid that very realization. Great writing!

    Learning to Be Anaïs

Three months after I had left Mama's house, Uncle Ronnie called Daddy. Mama had gone and married Darnell; the same man who put his hands on her, the same man she chose over me. Uncle James almost went to jail...

    • This is kinda where my mind has been lately. I recently took a lower paying, more physically demanding job just to access these very feelings. I just wanted feel what real living is like again. You’ll only get what you give, and many of us have to give a lot more just to get a little, but these are the conditions that shape the poet. Keep trying, and keep in mind that more people see you than you realize! Life is hard fkn work! But I know you know this, because you are a poet!!

    • Thankfully you, we all, have access to let it all out in writing. That is our strongest voice. God knows that creative writing really helped me become who I am. I still have a vocal glitch, that hits me whenever it wants, but it isn’t a handicap. I have learned to be confident regardless. Writing gives us a super power. You will win the battles Fia.
      Awesome write.

    • Powerfully penned, Fia. Another excellent write with many deep layers my friend. This one has a musing vibe while turbulence is stirring beneath the surface. I concur with Mark. Amazing read as always. Appreciate you, Cuz.

    • willow… wow… when I heard this its as if I was sitting on that porch listening to the the story… amazing

    • Beautiful. I love this. Powerful. Vivid and sharp.

    • First off, the rhyme scheme is on point. I can tell you really had to pull some crafty words to make the rhyme and tempo stay true. You succeeded. The story within is great, it follows through well and ends with a great mood.
      Awesome Willow.

    • I just listened to the recording! The music matched the tone of your write perfectly.
Even the voice! I’m all for letting go of dead weight in any write. Nicely done:)

    • Powerfully penned, Willow. Another excellent write that exercises demons while telling this tale of survival my friend. The music sets the mood as the voice delivers the truth while speaking your words with precision. Goosebumps on this one. Amazing read/listen as always. Appreciate you, Sis.
