BRIGHT SMILE, DARK LESSON

HomePoetryBRIGHT SMILE, DARK LESSON

I love the devil—

not for his fire,

but for the warning he carries.

The darkest minds

can hide behind the brightest smiles.

Teeth clean.

Eyes kind.

Hands open like they mean no harm.

I learned that goodness

is not always gentle-looking,

and evil does not always arrive loud.

Sometimes it laughs with you,

claps you on the shoulder,

calls you brother.

And somehow—

through that knowing,

through that disappointment—

the brightest soul is made.

Not naïve.

Not blind.

But awake.

Light that has never met shadow

doesn’t know its own strength.

It shatters easily.

But light that survives darkness

learns how to stay.

So if I say I love the devil,

what I mean is this:

I respect the lesson.

I keep my eyes open.

And I choose my goodness

with my whole mind awake.

I know the devil isn’t a real being

It’s my/our inner ego, our lower selves

That we need to rise above

He isn’t evil like you were tought.

We need to balance this light and darkness

Because you can’t have the good without the bad

The dark without the light.
