This entry is part 5 of 5 in the series punishment for thieves and lovers

I never planned
to keep it this long

just wanted a taste
once
the way it sparked in my hands
all restless heat and sharp edges
laughin like it already knew
I’d never give it back

and maybe I didn’t mean to
but I held on tighter
til the light ran down my arms in thin rivers
til its name was seared into my bones
til my lungs filled with it
and I couldn’t breathe without the need

it was never bout the burnin
it’s the hum after
that fever in my skin
that makes the dark
look smaller than it

and it pulls at me
like it knows I’ll starve without it
like it’s grinnin in the dark
darin anyone stupid enough
to try and take it away

let them come
same teeth
same claws
same patient little smile
I’ll open myself wide
let them tear and dig
til they find out the hard way
it doesn’t live where they’re lookin

it’s under my ribs now
wired into the frantic poundin there
and I will set myself on fire
burn myself hollow
leave nothin
but its name in the ash
if that’s what it takes

mine
only mine
always mine

    1. First of, the title for your series is what caught my eye, but your a freaking awesome wordsmith…

I always find more than one line I relate to (it’s usually the whole dam thing, but this:

“it was never bout the burnin
      it’s the hum after”

      I’m so damn giddy there’s a series.

    2. “and it pulls at me
like it knows I’ll starve without it
like it’s grinnin in the dark
      darin anyone stupid enough
to try and take it away”

Powerfully penned, Ambjr. I connect with this verse my friend, but this has layers all throughout. Superb write. Appreciate you.
