The Last Station

Smoke stacks rise in the distance
we’ve been here before
scent of horror on the tip of my senses
railway cars filled with scorn
unclenched of perceived accommodation
train rail clicks the sound of disdain
engineer’s whistle blows
how did we lose the site of humanity
fill up the cars no tickets sold
signs to protest the atrocity
inspector gets you on board
soot in the air
the ghost of another
will history blame us for lining up in rows
did we live in a time
we could’ve done better
do we take this ride
so the future may know
goodbye to my love
goodbye to the children
farewell to my friends
to the coming day
while these ruins lay under our feet
waiting for our time to be placed in the annals
inside histories great book
whistle blows out our scream of destruction
someday we’ll learn to live and to love one another
someday
someday
until then soot
