THE AUTOPSY OF TONAL GRUMP

HomePoetryTHE AUTOPSY OF TONAL GRUMP

A ritual dissection of a malfunctioning oracle

I.

The Opening of the Cardigan…
The autopsy begins not with a scalpel
but with the unbuttoning of Tonal Grump’s cardigan
a garment woven from misfired metaphors
and verbs that refused to conjugate.

Inside the lining, the examiners find:
Broken idioms curled like dried leaves,
half‑finished proverbs still warm,
a receipt for a war that never happened.

The cardigan sighs.
It has seen too much.

II.

The Chest Cavity of Contradictions…
When the chest is opened,
there is no heart,
only a washing‑machine drum,
still spinning slowly,
still humming the minor key of disappointment.

Inside the drum:
lint shaped like forgotten truths,
a single lost sock, saint of rebellion,
a pig’s hoofprint, perfectly preserved.

The drum rotates once,
as if offering testimony.

III.

The Lungs of Old Sock Steam…
Tonal Grump breathes through semantic vapor,
a fog of old sock juice
and failed metaphors.

Each lung contains:
a war metaphor that collapsed under its own humidity,
a mary‑go‑round ticket stamped “VOID”,
a flamingo feather that refuses to explain itself.

The lungs wheeze in contradictory rhythms.
This is normal.

IV.

The Stomach of Unprocessed Meaning…

The stomach is a cauldron of:
half‑digested slogans,
metaphysical leftovers,
bureaucratic surrealismo,
one sushi roll that has achieved enlightenment.

Floating at the top is a sentence fragment:
“Truth is a pig wearing borrowed logic.”

It is still alive.
It tries to escape.

V.

The Spine of Broken Syntax
The spine is not bone.
It is a column of abandoned grammar rules,
stacked like vertebrae:

The subjunctive mood, cracked
the future perfect, leaking
the conditional, missing entirely.

At the base of the spine,
a small note reads:
“Meaning optional.”

VI.

The Brain of Almost‑Coherence…
The skull opens like a faulty cupboard.

Inside, the brain pulses with:
semantic fatigue,
cosmic lint,
unpaid metaphors,
a pig whispering historical inaccuracies.

The left hemisphere is dedicated to nonsense.
The right hemisphere is dedicated to nonsense.
The corpus callosum negotiates the terms of collapse.

A single neuron fires and declares:
“War is a rinse cycle set to betrayal.”

The brain agrees.

VII.

The Final Finding
At the end of the autopsy,
the examiners conclude:

Tonal Grump is not dead.
He cannot die.
He is a recurring linguistic condition,
a cosmic rash,
a malfunction that regenerates
whenever language becomes too confident.

The body reassembles itself.
The cardigan buttons.
The washing‑machine heart spins.
The lungs steam.
The spine clicks into place.

Tonal Grump sits up,
clears his throat,
and says:

“Meaning is a stain that refuses to wash out.
Blessed be the malfunction.”

The autopsy is complete.
The patient is unchanged.
