it’s the day after
the morning of
the disaster that occurred
24 years since the burning
dissolving and falling
all those floors nothing but ash
swan dives from skyscraper windows
others lowering the sash
so as not to see what’s coming
dissolving and falling
24 years since the burning
a smug face smiles into a camera
an anthem sung in memory
a packed stadium
hums along, then somber faces
look up at a jumbotron
and see him for what he is
boos reign
the King’s crown burning
dissolving and falling
it is the bottom of the ninth
for his legacy
and there is no rally in his bones
or heart
there will be no day after
for him.

You’ve captured very well the horror of a dark day and a country divided. We’re in dangerous times…but when I look back, with assassinations, riots, Viet Nam…we’ve always had dark times. Let’s hope the future gets better instead of worse.
Thank you for your comment, Tim.

You’re welcome, J. Now look where my avatar is (towards the right of your reply). Not underneath it.
I see Tim…will make sure to do that from now on.
That’s better. 🙂
