Summary:
The most terrifying thought I have is losing my wife and children. I consider this my scariest poem I've written yet.

My eyes want to shut but I cannot sleep

As my dearest little one is playing hide and seek

All around our house I sneak and creep

I call for my deary, promising I didn’t peek

You’re not in the closets or under the beds

Not in any room as I keep looking, so weary

I go through all the bedspreads

But still can’t find her so I call out, “Ok, you win my sweet deary.”

No response as my voice echoes through the hall

I am considering waking my wife to ask her for help; I’m just so damn tired

Argh, GOD DAMN IT! I step on a Lego and nearly fall

It’s so late and my little one is overtired and wired

I remember when she was a baby, so quick to learn to walk

Always too smart and the most precious thing to me

Not even a year old and she learned to talk

I cherish every moment and always dwell on each memory

Oh, how I love her and my wife, they’re both my entire world

I’d hold them each in a loving embrace for all time if I could

I tear out linens from the closet carelessly as they unfurled

So very early in the morning, we all need to sleep, we really should

I call her again, “Deary let’s stop for the night and go to sleep.”

I go into my room to wake up my wife

Entering quietly to not startle her, I slowly creep

But the bed is empty and the pillows untouched, where is the love of my life?

They’re playing together to make me search harder

I grab a flashlight and check in the yard, thinking they’re behind the big oak tree

The light breaks the dark and behind the tree is nothing; I laugh at them being smarter

Glancing at my phone and it’s so early in the morning, it’s nearly three

Going back inside, I take a seat to rest and think; it’s time for the game to cease

A sudden memory, I recall the sound of… of metal screaming

Of tires… of tires squealing… a… a shattering of peace

Just outside my wife and deary in a ruined car, no! I’m just dreaming

Tears fill my eyes and I shake my head to try to clear my mind

Oh! I remember now what I was doing, my deary’s favorite game, hide and seek

Restarting my seeking, I tell myself this time, my love, it’s you I will find

I yell to her again, “Sweet flower of mine, you can’t hide forever, I promise I didn’t peek.”

I’ve been playing the game every day and night now for two entire weeks

I’m tired and ready for bed but until I find her I know I can’t sleep

When I find her I’ll give her a big loving kiss on her rosy cheeks

I just love her and my wife with all my heart so deep

Now and forever I will play your favorite game
