How long have you guys been writing poetry for? From what age? And what inspired you?

I started writing poetry when I was in the fourth grade. My grandmother wrote poetry and she told me that no matter how I felt, to write it down. I won my first poetry contest in school that year. I stopped writing in 1996 and didn’t start again until 2020. It’s a long story, but let’s just say that life got in the way.

I probably wrote my first poem in grade 4 or 5 like Adira… I have no idea why I stopped writing after I finished high school and moved to college in London… yes life.. and some people along the way…
I returned to writing poetry again in the 95 or 96.. I never wrote any stories then a lady came my way and she insisted I write her a short story… and that was “a night with a stranger”… my first.
That story was meant as a short story.. then she kicked my ass again to write more of until it became what it is now…
So basically my inspiration was always a lady some where sometime in someway… and that kick in the ass usually help…

Mine is,well,a little bit silly. It all started in 2018,when I received a big notebook,with cat paw prints on the pages,and I wanted to write something in it so it does not sit around and collect dust. At the time,I was also just getting into a game called “”Doki Doki Literature Club””, and it made me think,what if I started my own poems like the characters?
I started out with vent poems just to practise,and forward to now,this big notebook is filled with my progress,and I am writing in a new one. We all start from somewhere,and I have certainly improved since my first few attempts.

Also at that time when I started,I was around 11 – 12 years old. I also heard that one of my favorite singers,Melanie Martinez,wrote since kindergarten. It’s the internet,so I can’t be 100% sure it is true,but if it is,that would be impressive.

My English teacher got me into poetry and journaling when I was 13. So 27 years I’ve been writing, mostly poetry, with the occasional prose or short story, and recently song lyrics, which is a new challenge.

We all start from somewhere. I have a 72 year old neighbor, he has schizophrenia and an addiction to crack. When he found out that I write poetry he shared his with me. He has what looks like hundreds of notebooks in his living room filled with poetry about his life on the streets, his addiction and his mental illness. Each poem is also dated. He doesn’t think they are good but they are. We all start from somewhere, it doesn’t matter where. Poetry is who we are
