Hands of Leaves

Summary:
I wrote this one October afternoon when I found a leaf on the ground. It looked like my hand! So off my mind went. Enjoy the read!

Another Oak October
is soon to pass
but not before
I heed the calling
of my documentary tree

With aged brown leaves
and venation patterns
veins similar and akin
to my ancestors hands

resembling the duration
of time evolved skin
as I walk by they are
being pulled by
Autumn’s breath

but for now
they are rebellious

instead they boldly follow
behind me forming a cape
careful not to
touch the ground

not yet

My family of withered foliage
ready to catch me
if I stumble in the wind
Ready to slip into my hand
and steer me towards
a smarter, timely path

Mimicking the sound
of clapping hands
behind and beside me
encouraging and pointing.
all the while knowing

They are also
nature’s clocks
reminding me
we only are here
for so long

before we wither
as though tea leaves
and the ground decides
to steep and drink us

    1. I guess we can see ourselves in everything nature has to offer… a tree rising then withering away, a leaf dancing in the wind then falling to the ground, a cloud flying above then evaporating in the sky… a beautiful poem
