A Lifetime Between Your Lips

HomePoetryA Lifetime Between Your Lips

Your mouth is a promise

half-kept,

half-aching.

Red like truth spoken too late,

soft like a confession

I’m afraid to finish.

I don’t touch you yet.

That’s where the power lives—

in the pause,

in the heat gathering

behind restraint.

Your breath leans toward mine

like it already knows

how this ends.

There is hunger here,

but it isn’t desperate.

It’s deliberate.

A slow burn curling under the skin,

the kind that doesn’t rush

because it plans to stay.

Your lips hold history.

Every almost,

every night you swallowed words

instead of saying my name.

I feel it when you part them—

that quiet tremor

that says you want this

as much as you fear

how deep it might go.

I imagine the kiss

before it happens.

Not the act—

the aftermath.

The way the world would tilt,

the way time would loosen its grip,

the way we’d never quite return

to who we were before.

This isn’t lust without meaning.

This is desire

rooted in recognition.

A wanting that sees me back,

that knows my edges,

that chooses me anyway.

If I kiss you,

it won’t be quick.

It will be the kind that rewrites memory,

the kind that stays on your mouth

long after I’m gone.

One kiss.

Slow.

Certain.

Enough to last a lifetime—

because some touches

don’t end.
