IT’LL ONLY BE A MEMORY

Bookmark
HomePoetryIT'LL ONLY BE A MEMORY
Summary:
I wrote this because I've been told several times even growing up that because I'm very forgetful I could be prone to Alzheimer's and just recently my doctor said the same thing, not something you really want to hear.

Each and every poem is a memory

Yet they’re ones I’ll soon forget

Because this mind is playing tricks on me

But these words ain’t left me yet

I can still write them down on paper

My mind’s still active all the time

So I’ll leave these memories for you to hold

For when I start losing mine

You can remind me of all the days

Of all the years I came online

With a few poems here and there

Whether they were free verse or simply rhymed

Maybe you can remind me of a quote

That one line that made you smile

The ones that brought you out of the darkness

Even if it was only for a while

Because soon each one will be a mystery

Just this grey fog inside my mind

A memory that lies within forgotten

A moment in time I’ll never find

~~~🎵SONG LYRICS🎵 ~~~
(Spoken-Word (Beginning)
Every word I write is proof I was here.
If one day I forget my own voice,
lLetthese lines remember it for me.
(Verse 1)
Each and every poem is a memory,
ink trying hard not to fade.
This mind keeps playing tricks on me,
but these words still beg me to stay.
I can write them down on paper,
but the noise won’t leave me alone.
I’m leaving pieces of myself behind
in case I can’t find my way home.
(Chorus)
It’ll only be a memory someday,
a shadow of who I used to be.
So hold these words when I let go,
rRemember the parts I can’t see.
If my mind drifts too far away,
promise you’ll come remind me—
I was more than the silence inside,
even if it’s only a memory.
(Verse 2)
You can remind me of the days I showed up,
all the years I went online.
Free verse truths, crooked rhymes,
trying to outrun time.
Maybe quote that one small line
that pulled you out of the dark.
If it helped you breathe for a moment,
then I didn’t miss my mark.
(Chorus)
It’ll only be a memory someday,
a shadow of who I used to be.
So hold these words when I let go,
Rememberthe parts I can’t see.
If my mind drifts too far away,
promise you’ll come remind me—
I was more than the silence inside,
even if it’s only a memory.
(Bridge)
Because soon it may all be mystery,
just a grey fog in my head.
Moments buried under forgetting,
names, faces, things I said.
But if something of me survives,
let it be what I gave away—
a feeling, a light, a reason to stay.
(Spoken-Word (End)
If I forget my own memories,
let this be the truth you keep:
I was here, I felt deeply,
And I loved every word I wrote.
    1. I relate to this. I forget things all the time. I have post it notes all over my desk at work to help me remember things.
      My grandmother ended up with dementia and I see some signs right now with my mom, so I get this write.
      All I can say is keep writing!
    2. Powerfully penned, Lizz. This is something I worry about as well my friend. My memory is slowing down and not what it used to be that’s for sure. Very honest write, thanks for sharing. Appreciate you.
