Drowned in Cutty Sark

HomePoetryDrowned in Cutty Sark

Once upon a midnight shoals, drowned in Cutty Sark counting the dead when the tide turned, dragging its wet fingers through my ribs while barnacles whispered my name like a debt unpaid. You’ll know me by the hollow where the ship’s bell used to swing, by the way the gulls scream when they spy my salt-cracked hands still clutching the ledger of every soul I failed to save. They say I haunt the harbor lights, but that’s a kindness, truth is, I’m just the echo of a wave that never broke, the shadow of a net too rotten to hold anything but ghosts. Come dawn, you’ll find me dissolved in the mist, just another stain on the docks, just another story the sea got tired of telling, drowned in Cutty Sark counting the dead.
