As the winds came tumbling down
all elbows and shattered crowns
howling through the hollows
of forgotten prayers
Where the saints once knelt
licking the dust from altars
where no hands were felt
now, the rattling of bones
Now ghosts have grown weary
that held brimstone and fire
wrapped in tattered shrouds
but the hymns no longer listen
Once trees, gathering in ashes
a choir of unhinged leaves
gnawing at the edges of the sky
as the winds came tumbling down
