You’re staring,” Musette, her voice barely a ripple in the dark.
“Hard not to,” Sean replied. He didn’t move, watching the way the Gotham City lights caught the edge of her silhouette as she stepped out of her clothes. “The city looks gray tonight. You make the room look gold.”
She paused, one strap of silk falling from her shoulder, and looked at him with a steady, knowing brightness. “And what does that make you?”
“The lucky one,” Sean shispered.
Musette stepped closer, the silence between them heavy and familiar, and rested a hand on his shoulder. The touch was light, but it grounded him, pulling the rest of the world, the noise, the traffic, the deadlines…out beyond the windowpane. “You’re thinking too loud again,” Musette whispered.
Sean leaned into her touch, closing his eyes. “I was just thinking that it’s too quiet out there, and just right in here.”
“Stay in the quiet then,” Musett she said, her voice a warm, constant glow. “Just stay right here.”
The room was a cavern of shadows, carved out by the jagged, neon geometry of the city skyline bleeding through the blinds. She moved with a predatory slowness, shedding her blazer and heels…the armor of her professional life…until she was something softer, something more dangerous. Every movement was a sentence; every pause was a question.
She stopped just inches from him, the scent of “Obsession” and something faintly metallic clinging to her skin. The silence between them wasn’t empty; it was heavy, pressurized, like the air before a storm breaks. She reached out, her fingertips grazing the line of his shoulder, a claim. “The city is screaming,” she whispered, her voice a low vibration that seemed to echo in his chest. “But in here? I can’t hear anything but your heart.”
She stepped closer, closing the final inch of space. Her eyes weren’t just bright; they were hungry, reflecting the flickering amber lights of the skyline and something far more primal. She didn’t need to promise anything. The way she looked at him was the promise. “Tell me,” she breathed, her lips brushing the shell of his ear, “do you still remember how to breathe when I’m this close?”
