There he was…
Laying on the cool grass looking up at the sky
Longing to be in her sweet arms once again
Wishing he could hold her close just one more time
Dreaming of a moment that would never end
He rests on the ground as clouds surround him
Thinking of the day he met that beautiful girl
They were so young when they fell deeply in love
Remembering how he promised her the world
He pauses, breathing slowly with a sad smile
Knowing he assured her he would come back home
His heart still beats for her, regardless of pain
Holding her letters, he doesn’t feel alone
There he was…
With the memory of open wide spaces
He built that house for her there on the prairie
The way she looked at him in that pink sundress
The dream of the girl he wanted to marry
There he was…
On the pasture holding on tightly to hope
Recalling her smile when they rode horses
The surreal sound of her voice calling to him
The tears she cried when he joined the armed forces
There…
As he lays there amidst the chaos and death
A young man recollects on the love that fate sealed
Whispering her name with his very last breath
A wounded soldier dies on the battlefield

Powerfully penned, Wally. Excellent write my friend, grabbed me by the heartstrings a bit. Nicely done. Appreciate you.
Damian
Thanks Damian. I’ve always liked writing pieces that have plot twists or bigger reveals at the end. I often think of those who are passing and what their last thoughts may be.
Wow this a touching piece. The memory of him building the house for her as he is passing away is sweet and sad
Thank you Fia. I was trying to have this piece read more as a Civil War piece but felt that it’s obscurity in time could be left open to interpretation and connection to the reader.
