Porcelain

Fair

demeanor and character

delicate frame

warm hearted and soft spoken

Wide eyes

so full off life

Innocence blushed on

rose dusted cheeks

Picturesque dream

of elegance and grace

Sophisticated and awash with class

Sinister eyes locked upon her

in lust and intrigue

Outside of his league

she sat proudly propped

high on a shelf

he could never reach

But he coveted what she held

longing to own what she had

Despite his attempts, she remained the one just beyond his grasp

The image of her still lingering

attempting to recreate her likeness

in those more accessible and commonplace

he developed an affinity for rag dolls

preferring cheap conveniences

Nondescript; easy to bend, mold, shape, groom, and decorate.

Durable, sturdy, easy to mend

they could withstand his careless rashness

Tears endured from aggressive tendencies were stitched up with little effort

stuffing swiftly replaced with fictions and illusions

One day in a second hand store, he saw her there.

On a middle shelf,

life had left her with a broken heart, scuff marks, and hazy eyes.

Still captivated and enchanted by her beauty

Undeterred by the chips in her worth

seeing them as proof they weren’t so different after all

Selling her dreams and lies

she was the one he had been searching for, the one fated for him

the missing piece to his puzzle

everything he needed to change

Offering hand me down promises,

not the first, nor last to be swindled by defective seconds chances at love

He took her home, proud of his conquest

yet clueless and unaware

of how to properly tend to

and cherish a maiden of such fragility and daintiness

For porcelain doesn’t deform and distort in obliging obedience but  cracks and shatters in tightly gripped and hasty hands

He despised her beauty

unable to make contort or exploit at his command

Rigidly resistant to play along with his favored, deeply ingrained and twisted games

In desperate effort

to achieve subservience

he stripped her down,

until no distinguishing mark was found

dressed her up in his insecurities and character defects

only to despise the image echoed back

desperate efforts failed to bring back  her native features

It was too late

she would never be the same again

what was broken, erased, and changed could never be undone

In selfish, obsessive and possessively driven fits of rage

he flung her against the wall

vindicated as he watched her pieces fall

Pausing only momentarily at the damage done

Indifferently walking across the broken shards

One final act of carelessness

Before reaching into his toy chest

Picking out a previously favored

familiar and awaiting rag doll

resuming with life,

uninterrupted.

And without a remorseful glance

she became nothing more than

just another victim

added to his ever growing

body count

Turns out,

she wasn’t so special

after all

    1. Writes like these are usually born from experience and when they touch the readers core like they have mine, it’s for the same reason. If this was just a poetry prompt though, you smashed it.

        • I’m really sorry you’ve had that experience.
Like recognizes like. That’s why it resonated so deeply. I didn’t want to blatantly out you though.

          Have a good night, Julia
