I know I’m being unreasonable
and that it’s absolutely understandable,
but I hate being this way, nonetheless.
Having always valued my own company,
I no longer want to be alone with my thoughts,
but I don’t want to talk, or to listen.
Well-meaning advice feels critical and patronising,
and it’s easy for friends to contact me too much
or too little –
my tolerance has waned.
Companionable silence works well,
but what I want most of all
is just to be with my daughter.
And I never can.
