I’ve heard it said
whispered behind guilty hands
“she’s unconventional”
as if they believed I hadn’t overheard
thinking I don’t understand…
the slightest pause between their words
spells their very definition
as I roll my eyes
thinking to myself…
why can’t they just say it
exactly the way they mean it…
“she’s different”
I’m an abstract painting
in a color by number world
I’m an independent
think for herself kinda girl
I don’t follow in crowds
not afraid of standing out
I’m soft and I’m gentle
and strong as tempered steel
I’m completely at home in a skirt
as it lifts on a breeze
but not afraid of getting dirty
or rolling up my sleeves
if I want it…I’ll earn it
I’m just busy keeping it real
I’m manners and compassion
in your arms…fire and passion
for love…
there’s not much I wouldn’t do
I’m not that complicated
my place is where I make it
if you get me…
it could be next to you
but let me speak clearly
I’m not afraid to eat alone
I know what I bring to the table
unconventional my ass
I refuse to wear a label
