Such good writing Peter. So often, couples won’t acknowledge the other until one day there’s one less partner to walk through life with. Death hits hard and the regret of not sharing openly the feelings that still linger underneath.
Your poem narrates characters in a story of their lives. They live through your words. This is so well done.

This is probably the way it is for most older couples. Yet always at least parallel, not veering away. Close enough for a hand to hold, to acknowledge the other. I envy that, to have someday. Just to know I am not ever really alone. As bittersweet as it can seem, it is also a reward unto itself. That commitment to stay so near, even if it seems a bit far at times. Hearts have a way…
Wonderful write. Poignant and pin-point.

This had my heart pounding for you. That is something I would never want for anyone to experience in their lives. It does happen though.

Hi Fia,
It all happened so fast and yet the memory of it is still fresh in my mind after so many years. Now that I read books and stories I’m baffled at how bad (or worse) it was for others. There is a movie coming out later this year about one of these massacres. I wrote a piece about it while at DU but I know the movie will tell the heartbreaking story in detail.

Sometimes I’m a little partial to war and the suffering because of it. The futility of the common soldier and civilians. it’s never glamorous and never without suffrage. You wrote it well.

Thank you so much Styxian.
The damage it does to people as a society has long lasting consequences. As I was telling Fia in the previous comment, the movie coming out later this year will tell more of the stories. We must always learn our history to see where we’ve been so we see the signs ahead.
Hope you’re doing well.

Awesome! This is the poem of the day to me. The frustration jerking the pen across the page, all helter skelter. The need to be stern and yet softened at the core.
Awesome!

This takes me to the thought…if it’s not noticed, is it real? Time is one of the most precious gifts, and it’s not an infinite sum allotted. Pay attention to it. It’s gone between one breath and the next. This is brilliant in its simple complexity. It’s good to see your words again
