I was four yrs old tied into an orange life preserver
load us all into the boat
Uncle Skip
He sure was Skipper of us all
Everyone else lost
I’m not even joking
Aunt Pat mowing the lawn down to splinters and pain
Kathy’s brownies oh Kathy’s brownies!
Bronze burned into a summer day
There is sun in this world we rest in the rain
Scott dropping the watermelon next to the seawall
spit a memory of seeds
Run as fast as you can
Don’t fall through some rotted wood
Off the dock
Jump!
Hold your breath
Into the air you go
Fall into the water
Listen as the boats muffled engines speed by
Chris throwing aunt Pat off the end of that dock
Close my eyes at twilight
I watch from the back of a 71 station wagon
Sky turning to orange
Into the peace they gave us
Oh yah and love
