What Isn’t Heard
there’s a vastness…
you can’t even fathom…
a universe you can’t imagine…
within the realm of silencestories untold
realities unexpected
contemplative reflection
pain unspokeneverything locked inside a vacuum
where the wall of it…
can hold someone hostage
a victim of their own thoughtsyou can’t hear the noise in their heads
or how it deafens
don’t know the cause…
that created their effectbecause silence isn’t always stillness
but rather sometimes…
it’s the weight of staring into an open grave
…knowing it’s just waitingone wrong step…
and they’re going under
but you can’t hear that…
can you?2 Comments

Yes, I can hear that silence. It’s the silence of a mother whose son has been cut down in a gang war or a war in a foreign country. Or the anguish of needing formula for our kids but no money to buy it. It’s the search for decent work, but not enough education to get it. Its the cries of children hiding under desk when the gunman came to school. Its the internal sound made not knowing how to end the noise. And then there is the silence that has found that “grave”. Willow, we carry a lot of weight, a lot of silence of internal screams, a lot of silence and it eats us til there is nothing left but a hollowness or for some a blind rage of violence. Just a few thoughts I had as I read your poem, Willow. Thanks for writing it. -Curt
