don’t turn away

don’t avoid their pain

don’t be afraid…

closets have their bones

tucked well away from sight

broken bits and pieces…

left cowering behind

scattered in the shadows

if not forgotten…then denied

but there are little ghosts remaining

forced to hide their truth inside

you know what I’m saying?

broken dolls…

and damaged knights

left locked away in the dark

shattered spirits left behind

unnoticed and unwanted…

years of unspoken secrets…

leaving them eternally haunted

crying creatures…dragging entrails

fearing beasts with rattling chains

whispers heard through dusty corridors

where children hide in corners

too frightened to come play

where those who should be trusted

become monsters laying in wait

leaving little phantoms in the night…

while eerie playgrounds remain vacant…

abandoned by the light

little girl fairy tales…

slightly twisted

cherished none-the-less

remnants of a forgotten tea set

chipped cups with fractured saucers

ragged dolls and tattered dresses

fading dreams and dusty things

as time slips slowly…

down rusting slides

little girl fairy tales…

no longer trusted

by the time she finally understood…

no hero was coming to her rescue…

she’d already saved herself

don’t turn away…

  1. There’s a damn haunting tenderness here, using broken toys, dusty playgrounds, and little ghosts to give buried childhood pain a physical shape. The final turn is powerful—the girl discovers that no hero is coming, so she becomes the one who saves herself, making “don’t turn away” feel like both a warning and a plea.

    • Wow, I’m a bit speechless at how you picked all that up. This one came from a deep place and I never draw pictures beyond the words. You are apparently fluent in imagery. Thank you, Thomas

  2. Powerfully penned, Willow. An excellent write with many deep layers my friend. The pain in your words are felt throughout this piece, and the imagery really paints the picture as well. Spoken word really worked well here. I also really appreciated the slow build of the music. The adding of other instruments and elements as the sound kept getting fuller and busier in each stanza. Top notch sis. Amazing read/listen as always. Appreciate you.

    • This one had to be spoken word. The message is too important to bury. The human tendency to turn away when something makes them uncomfortable causes so much damage. I’m a bit jacked that way. I tend to want to heal it, to help, whenever I see something that causes discomfort. I know how it feels to be the one they turn away from. Thank you, Damian
