I’ve heard it said
whispered behind guilty hands
“she’s unconventional”
as if they believed I hadn’t overheard
thinking I don’t understand…
the slightest pause between their words
spells their very definition
as I roll my eyes
thinking to myself…
why can’t they just say it
exactly the way they mean it…
“she’s different”
I’m an abstract painting
in a color by number world
I’m an independent
think for herself kinda girl
I don’t follow in crowds
not afraid of standing out
I’m soft and I’m gentle
and strong as tempered steel
I’m completely at home in a skirt
as it lifts on a breeze
but not afraid of getting dirty
or rolling up my sleeves
if I want it…I’ll earn it
I’m just busy keeping it real
I’m manners and compassion
in your arms…fire and passion
for love…
there’s not much I wouldn’t do
I’m not that complicated
my place is where I make it
if you get me…
it could be next to you
but let me speak clearly
I’m not afraid to eat alone
I know what I bring to the table
unconventional my ass
I refuse to wear a label

This latest piece is fabulous.
When will we learn that it’s the ‘different ones’ that actually make a difference.
You’d make a great morning coffee companion….. at least for me anyway.
🙏
I gotta take my coffee decaf these days. 😊 But my quill and I are always down for a gathering. It would be a pretty dull place if everyone was “same”. Thank you, Peter
Powerfully penned, Willow. Another excellent write with words that cut right to the chase my friend. This one is full of attitude which drives throughout the song. You have a knack for writing a great chorus, sis. That is a skill! And that bridge at the end was a nice change of pace. You are constantly improving your arrangements and it shows. Amazing read and listen as always. Appreciate you.
Damian
Oddly enough, that chorus was part of the original poem. It just felt like a focal to me, so it became a chorus. That happens a lot with my songs, actually. This was originally part of poetry month entries, a couple years ago. Thank you for supporting my efforts, brother. So much appreciated
I like a write that shows the subtle courage of the author, without boastfulness. This succeeds wonderfully. It’s a good mix of grit and enlightenment. Good stuff, Willow.
Read my new write, methinks you just may like it. 🙂
Oooh, now I gotta go check it out! I’m intrigued! 😊 Thank you, Styxian. Always good to see you in the halls 😊
