A Certainty of Death

Summary:
A grief-stricken mortal journeys through infernal realms and across the River Styx in a desperate attempt to reclaim his lost love from the clutches of eternal damnation.

Marching toward vengeance beneath salvation’s veil,

Seeking the love stolen
By a sword’s cruel blow.

A doleful, wretched heart
Belonging to a credulous mortal man.

Does your shade not etiolate
In pursuit of what cannot be reclaimed
To reach our eternal flame?

You’ve traversed your earthly plane
Across landscapes of fire,
Where the blood of the eternally tormented
Perpetually rains.

You’ve endured such extreme pains
That even my own demons
Would be driven
Unmitigatedly insane.

And here you are at last,
Upon the shores of my River Styx.
I shall give you one final chance
To turn around and quit.

Be assured—
Up my sleeves hide no tricks.
I grant you this final choice:

Go home now
And live to die an old man,
Or continue onward
With your foolish plan.

Your lover’s shade is mine to keep,
But I see within your own
That your lust runs too deep.

Step into my boat,
And I shall take you across.
Soon, all the hope you think you possess
Will be lost.

Nevertheless, carry on, mortal man.

For your death draws ever more near.

A thought that whets my appetite.

I look forward to perpetually torturing your shade
With my own expectant hands.
