make me an offer

HomePoetrymake me an offer
Summary:
unattended desire

I offer myself to you twice a day,
at morning’s opening, at night’s soft closure
an endless vow that neither time nor age
can strip away.

I know the reasons you reject my offer:
weariness dragging, desire gone quiet,
the body’s shifting tides,
the cooling of a flame.
Excuses, real or cruel,
pile into silence.

And yes, rejection cuts deep
but I suffer and swallow it
and wait in the ache of hope.

For if the day arrives
when you reach for me, unbidden,
offering yourself
then I will know it,
love not spoken,
but given,
because it cost you something.
