With an Open Heart

HomePoetryWith an Open Heart

I have an obsession with buying more time

So I watch the seconds hand sweep by

The open heart shows the mechanism inside

But then her frail hand covers mine

And time suddenly seems to slow down

I kiss her forehead

She smiles at me

I promise her a great meal and a beer

After we get out of here

And she nods with approval

Now, the hour is late

The continuous beeps of computers

The humming of machines

I sit by her bedside while she sleeps

Tonight it’s my turn to stay awake

I watch her breathe

Remembering when she used to tell me

“You gave me several of these grays”

The many nights she must’ve stayed up

The sacrifices she must’ve made

The prayers she must’ve prayed…

Time is of the essence

But now at this juncture

With an open heart

My soul feels a little bit of the weight of her ninety-five years

So for all those wrinkles and grays

I love her even more for them

      • Thank you Peter. I appreciate your comment.
This was for my grandmother who spent last week in the hospital. She’s back home now, but the time we spent with her gave me more reflection.

      • Thank you so much Damian.
She’s doing better now. It’s just that in those delicate times we learn to appreciate those relationships even more.
