How was he supposed to know what war looks like
When he had a duty he had to go fight
How was she supposed to stand and guard her heart
When she had no one to hold, she stood apart
They learned through a world where there’s no peace
Trying to be tough, fighting a war that should not be
Reliving the past that they wish they could not see
All those souls lost because they were told they were the enemy
Regrets and pain never leave their mind
Always wounds they feel down deep inside
It’s been years for them, but here we are today
Repeating the violence causes peace can’t stay
Give them respect that’s earned by blood
They fought for us because they understood
We gave them a day still, that’s still not enough
Don’t turn your head in shame or disgust
Those injuries that you see on their body
Could have easily been on you or me
To all those veterans who are still with us today
My heart, my respect is not enough, but I still give it to you in my own way

Wonderful tribute, Fia. You brought out the essence of what it’s all about.
Thank you, Tim😊
Fantastic!
Thank you, Adagio 😊
A worthy and well deserved tribute
Thank you, Jim;))
Great tribute for a very special day.
Thank you for posting this:)
Thank you for reading this, Adel;))
Fia, the river of your compassion for our soldiers flowed like deep channel of understanding and empathy here. This also flowed beautifully as a poem. I could feel the emotions you evoked with this poem. This is truly a poem of remembrance and understanding for people who sadly are left behind long after the battle is over because their battle continues long after the war is over.
John
Thank you, John it is true we fail to realize that some of them are still fighting.
Beautifully penned, Fia. Excellent tribute piece my friend. Appreciate you, cuz.
Damian
Thank you, Damian;))
Your brilliant poem shines with empathy, respect and understanding. Sadly, history repeats itself again and again. How many reminders like your heart touching and thought provoking poem will be needed until humankind learns to solve conflicts non-violently? Peace my friend!
Thank you, EIke, I agree when will we learn?
Chère F.,
What an exceptional write!
And before we point the finger of blame (if this is English) it is good to know that every country made their own mistakes at one time or another.
And as Goldenmyst says: the battle continues long after the war is over.
What an immense victory of talent (yours) over matter.
Warm regards, Gus
Thank you, Gus. No blame shaming at all. Just acknowledging people are people and these particular people should be honored. Every country should honor its soldiers.
Fantastic tribute. Well said.
Thank you, Vision;))
It seems all these years later, we are still hearing the reverberation of the lyrics to John Lennon’s song, “Imagine”. Living life in peace. When will it ever be?
I wish I know the answer to that. Thank you, Kelly;))
