Wake up in the morning,
with one goal in mind.
How to feed my babies,
without committing a crime.

Everyone sees,
But can not imagine.
How easy it could be.
How can this life happen?

Never wanted a picket fence,
or a house with a yard.
All I could ever hope for,
was to stay clear of those bars.

I went to a school.
Knowing I’m better than that.
Circumstances change.
Now I’m no better than that.

Six pairs of eyes,
Need food and clothes.
Three months cry.
I’m doing my best to shut those.

I do things with intention.
So let me make this clear.
If I didn’t want them.
They wouldn’t be here.

They are my moon, my sun, and my stars.
They are all the pieces of me without any scars.
They will be better than I ever was.
Don’t take it because I said it, take it just because.

The day I leave.
Giving up the ghost.
I’ll leave in peace.
This I know

They have each other’s backs.
That is what family is supposed to do.
In this day and age.
That is what I instilled in them to do.

Argue if you must.
Forgiveness is a must.
Those eyes they look into.
Are the same as mine, that they trust.

DWI is the motto I live by
Do with intention
Till the day I die.

    1. We do what we must. Well, the good ones do! Like you.
Speak your words, Fia. Take a bow and some praise. It ain’t easy out there. Luckily you’ve discovered the therapy of ceative writing. It DOES help. It can save souls, if we trust ourselves to focus on hope.
      Wonderful, uplifting write my dear.

    2. Man. I can relate to this. Not just myself but with my friends and family.
There is no telling where I’d be without my mom. She is my rock.
So empowering!! Thank you for posting !!

    3. I felt this deep in my marrow. Your dedication to those children renewed my faith in humankind. The struggle to keep your children fed and housed moved my heart deeply. This is truly one of your very best poems. It speaks to me of a mother’s love and her oh so protective spirit t keep her children safe, healthy, and well. This is much more than a poem it is a living breathing testament to a mother’s love. I loved this so much.
