follow the trail spread before you
lurid splashes of scarlet
scattered upon an alabaster floor
each its own delicate work of art
lacy patterns growing ever wider
a masterpiece most macabre
ignore the source of paint…
with every trembling step you take
morbid fascination draws…
and curious feet pull you on
with in-held breath…
you answer its ghoulish call
and I ask you…
why go that way?
what good can come of following blind…
without even knowing where it leads?
while you’re absorbed in the grisly path
eyes directed only down…
what is it you expect to find?
and how do you imagine it arrived?
have you forgotten…
that very often…
when blood is spilled on the ground…
there will also be a body?
and in your darkened hunger
you’re not looking up…
or behind…
so…who’s guarding your back?
bet you hadn’t even thought of that
