For the Rest of Your Life (Par 1)
I wanted to be the woman
you never had to recover from.
The one who remembered
how you took your coffee,
which side of the bed you slept on,
what made you laugh when you were trying not to,
what you needed when you said
you needed nothing.
I would have spent my whole life
learning you.
I would have loved you
until you were sick of being loved.
And even then,
I would have found another way.
But you kept going home to her.
Every night.
You would lie beside her
after telling me you couldn’t stand her touch.
You would wear her ring
while telling me you wished it were mine.
You would cry in my arms,
then walk back through her door
like I hadn’t just held all the broken pieces
she left behind.
Do you know what that did to me?
Listening to you say you wanted out.
Listening to you say you were afraid.
Listening to you tell me
you wished she would just disappear.
Maybe you didn’t mean it.
I did.

I felt it.
Powerfully penned, Kay. Another excellent write with deep layers my friend. Nicely done as always. Appreciate you.
