Summary:
Broken hearts. Everyone has had one. I was just a kid when I wrote this (another from the vault). Long since healed, and better off. But I kept the words. Any writer would (some of the time).
I got caught in your damage
And I think it left me cold
I thought I lost the bitterness
But it has just grown old
Your wounds feel too heavy here
And they’re more than I can hold
I never asked for your innocence
You shouldn’t ask for mine
It wasn’t there to begin with
Don’t seek what you cannot find
I may have burned your bridges here
But it was me who was left behind
You are not a savior
Who was meant to be rejoiced
You are standing on a pedestal
That was meant to be destroyed
While I became an enemy
Did I ever have a choice
I am not your predator
And you are not my prey
You may try and haunt me now
Yes I think that is your way
You cannot give your debt to me
In the end who is really going to pay
I want to let these feelings go
It’s time to set you free
I don’t want to hate you now
There is too much of that to be seen
I’ll just close my eyes to you
Now close your eyes to me

The way you move from accusation to release feels measured, almost gentle in its clarity.
That closing stanza settles like a door quietly closing. Beautifully written.
Thank you. Your words always mean a lot.
Powerfully penned, Brandon. Excellent write lots of layers my friend. I too have a vault so I can relate. Nicely done as always. Appreciate you.
