Anatomy of a Loss (2)

HomePoetryAnatomy of a Loss (2)

A standard Friday morning at work –
well, almost standard – I’d arrived late as planned
due to having to make an appointment.
Fifteen minutes in, the telephone rang.
“Would you like to take the call in the staff room,
or are you OK to take it there?”
“Here is fine,” I replied,
wondering what minor inconvenience had occurred.
The next four words: “Lauren’s been found unresponsive”
changed the course of my life.
Time thickened; each second containing years’ worth of thoughts and feelings.
I moved in slow motion, hyper-aware
yet unable to do anything remotely functional.
As my friend took over,
I collapsed on to the cold and shiny floor.

      • Thank you. I hope writing and music will help, eventually. We also managed to fulfil her wishes and donate her organs, which is a real positive. Nobody should have to go through this, though. She was only 17, was much loved, and it’s just horrific.
