Getting together with some old friends
Someone asked what we miss most
About our twenties. I answered the
Lack of cellphones; if you wanted to
Reach someone new, the answer was
In a book, and if I wasn’t home that
Meant I was busy doing something, so
I liked that I couldn’t be bothered…

Then I thought these three decades
Past twenty-five how I have everything
I dreamed of then, with people who
Don’t know the meaning of the word,
Not really, even calling me “a hero.”
I said, “It’s funny how I have everything
And more I used to dream of back then,

Yet the older I get the more I think of
Those times, and that’s all I yearn for…”
And there was a long time where none
Of us said a word, just looked instead
At the ice cubes swirling in our glasses…

      • With having daughters in their 20s and 30s it just NEVER even occurred to me NOT to answer my cellphone!! I mean, when I was younger I went WEEKS out of contact with the entire world living on the land in northern Canada and it’s not like the world ever ended.

You just may have changed my entire life, lol, I don’t have to answer mine either! And thanks for reading!

    1. I miss the ability to just go dormant for a few hours. Be untrackable and untethered. Now we have to turn off devices for that. My daughter is in her 30s and she’s had a cellphone since she got her driver’s license. She’s just now learning the value in just shutting down and being. I can relate to this one
