keep silent
or face the consequences
“Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte”
or we will chop off the hand holding the rose
or the TV host spewing political jokes
that used to be as acceptable
as helping ourselves to the last spoonful
of mashed potatoes.
keep silent
or the meal is over
the host will kick us all out
no dessert
no after-dinner conversation
no “Good Night”
just a thrown plate
filled with mashed tantrum
keep silent
and the militia
will walk by
on its way
to clean up the
dishes and plates
because they will do what it takes
to whitewash
the voices
sounding from the parlor
on their way out the door
to join the rest of us
who still live in what
used to be America
before the purloined invitations
were sent.

“Mashed tantrum”….I really like that turn of phrase….
