would you be there
if you found out I wasn’t that rich?
I grew up poor
had to fight for what I got
I’ll never be the one with a lot of cash
but what I have, I earned
is that worth something to you?
would you still care
if you knew about my hurt?
depression so heavy
sometimes my feet feel like stone
can you put up with me
in my insecure moments?
sometimes I have a hard time
putting up with myself
love isn’t all sunshine and rainbows
I have to ask myself the same questions
can I deal with whatever hardships arise?
what if you lost your job
we went down to one income
or what if you get sick
and need assistance?
will I have the patience?
when I look into your eyes
on these troubling moments
we sign the silent agreement
to always be there
no matter the storm

What I love about this piece is emotional intimacy… the shit you talk about at the end of a weekend vacation before Monday morning rolls around and bites you in the butt. You’re looking out over the horizon just wondering what tomorrow will bring, and it’s time to get real about where we are going. Are you with me or not? Am I really what you want? You brace yourself and pray for plain English after laying out your limitations.
I feel the anxiety and sense the reassurance. It’s well written, Nick.
I usually tell people that love takes a lot of hell to get to heaven. You have to be willing to go through that with that person. And I definitely have the experience.
Thanks for the read, friend.
