I’ve been surfing the Facebook Ocean
far too often
bobbing up and down gentle waves of escapism
swimming where it’s surreal
Life is hard
Facebook is easy
And so I’m back,
once again,
far too soon
far too often
lulled
by the lure
of alpha waves
soon to soothe
in troubled times.
My teaching job
makes me want to answer Neptune’s call
in the real ocean
the rough one
give in
give up
get mollified
go under.
Life is hard
Facebook is easy
And so I’m back in the social media sea
it’s any color I want it to be
Friends are here,
and cats
and memes
and baby donkeys
and exotic places
Lives on shores
I can visit
in stolen moments.
As I scroll,
I drift
toward an ever-expanding horizon line
Crashing demands
castaway
on the cold rocky shore.
Life is hard.
Facebook is easy
And so I soothe myself
in the sea
Temporarily.

You have a gift for storytelling.
Facebook is a trap, you become immersed in reality and fantasy then time becomes non-existent.
I enjoyed your post.
Thanks, Adira. Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for letting me know.
My pleasure
I try to use Facebook only for Marketplace and it still manages to steal the precious moments from me.
What is the actual point of it besides being a massive income stream for the already rich.
Friends meet for coffee where words are supported by body language.Facebook friends are so many other things but mostly they’re just words.
99% of social media is trash. Go old school and meet people on the street or at places of social gatherings. Awesome write my friend.
Thanks. I’m hoping to find a less stressful job, so I don’t need the escapism.
Dear PD,
I hear ya! While I’m not on FB I know the feeling of losing hours on YouTube! Holy crap what am I doing? And how did I get to this point? And yet…those precious hours somehow alleviate a lot of the angst from my real world. Fab and relatable write. H🌷
Thanks H. YouTube is another one of my vices. But I totally agree about how they alleviate angst- and that’s no small thing since there is so much of it today.
Super good write, Pink. I have to tell you that I ended up in Facebook jail too often to continue the experience. Well, you know. I’m just that kind of outlaw.
xoxo

How the heck do you even use Facebook… I can’t even get it to work…
OMG… am I that old?!
Pink, I spend far too much time on facebook. It is a sea of chaos and confusion I find. Your poem is very wise and you see social media with clear eyes. Like Emerson said, “As if we could kill time, without injuring eternity.”
