Ancient Dreams
roses of Ethiopia
blossoming in her cheeks
like ancient Abyssinian gardens
hanging from trellises of moonlight
in the thousand-year night
whose perennial stars
twinkle on the petals of her eyes
where Egyptian mascara
dark as the sheen
of Anubis prowling the midnight hours
on a hunt for lover’s pearls
iridescent as tears from the eye of Ra
that flood the Nile
to silt the fields with fertile dreams
of wheat from heaven
traded with Eritrea
for highland coffee beans
under the warm blanket
of the Milky Way
where eternity sleeps
nestled near Orion’s belt
as the turquoise amulet
shining with the Sirius eyes
of Isis in her sky dreams
