The Gender River Flows…

I played with my food as a little kid
building castles or red injun teepees
when I was Pocahontas or El Cid,

Canoeing wild peas up-stream to be hid
in tater caves ‘mid kaled jungly string-beans,
I played with my food as a little kid…

And my slow dine nigh blew my Ma’s lid
me born along by my own simple dreams
when I was Pocahontas or El Cid

I held that thought all my life, yes I did!
and tussled with things inside, still, unseen
as I played with my food as a young kid,

And it slowly dawned that gender’s fluid
as I punched boys or if chased ran and screamed,
when I was Pocahontas or, El Cid…

Then my dress could be trousered or kilted
But my faced aged past its peaches and cream
From when I played with my food as a kid,
When I was Pocahontas or El Cid…
