This entry is part 1 of 40 in the series Poetry of Life, Death & the In-between

Sometimes you lose someone before they’re gone.

Sometimes you only really see them as they pass.

Sometimes you miss the simplicity of strong arms lifting a little child

or that sandpaper touch of a scruffy bedtime nuzzle.

Sometimes all the memories, good and bad,

start to fade

until all that is left is a blurry sense,

a desire not to lose any more.

Sometimes what we miss most

is the idea of who might have been.

Image notes: I adapted the first AI generated image using FreshPaint watercolor effect.  The stroke direction from left to right is intentional as are the areas not fully filled with color (water spots?) on the right side.  It represents how the one lost left imprints and shadows on the one left behind and how the desire to have the lost one return leaves missing pieces in her existence.
