National Alliance to End Homelessness – “Over the course of 2023, nearly one million people (970,806 people) experienced homelessness for the first time, the highest number ever recorded.”
weekdays…
begin routinely with an alarm
hit the snooze button
a few minutes late is no harm
obligations…
must be met to make a living
budgets are tight
is there anything left for giving?
homelessness…
seems to always find a corner
with a cardboard message
oh, what civil derision befell her?
instinctually…
I always look away in thought
damn! this long red light
avoiding eye contact distraught
I ponder…her lot in life
morality…
somewhere between social norms
and personal beliefs
by and large our society scorns
technologically…
engineered is our earthly world
to destroy itself
10,000 times over; if ever unfurled
absurdity…
unleashed in scientific complexity
defining our humanity
yet we can’t solve basic necessity
weeknights…
end routinely with setting an alarm
turn out the lights
a few minutes early is no harm
enough for
introspection as I fall asleep
lying in my bed in my home
I ponder…her lot in life
Ahhh, yes. We did post similarly.
The ending to your poem…wow.
Bravo, my friend.
The only time we should stop speaking about this is when it has ended.
It is sad that we can spend billions of our tax monies on government special interests, but leave the assistance of the homeless, by and large up to the too few willing volunteers within communities.
Powerfully penned, Angel. That is a powerful song indeed, my friend. Appreciate you.
